According to Yonhap News,
The North Gyeongsang provincial government announced on October 15 that five industrial complexes within the province including Pohang steel industrial complex have been designated as Eco-Industrial Parks (EIP), which will be established as part of a national project pushed by the Korea Industrial Park Corporation.
In addition to the Pohang steel industrial complex, the EIP project includes Gumi national industrial complex, Chilgok Yaegwan industrial complex, Gyeongju Yoidong industrial complex, and Goryeong Dasan industrial complex no. 1 and 2.
Through the project, the five complexes will be developed into an environment-friendly
Industrial park, where the Pohang steel industrial complex will serve as the main complex and other complexes, as subsidiary facilities, will reuse waste and recycle byproducts to reduce pollution.
A North Gyeongsang provincial government official said,
"The EIP project would contribute to reducing 4,300,000 tons of byproducts and 150,000 tons of air pollutants every year, as well as enhancing competitiveness of the companies. This will generate KRW 243 billion worth of economic benefits.¡±
