Incentives and benefits within FEZs

Designation of Free Economic Zones is certainly welcome news for those looking for sound investment opportunities. Incheon, Busan-Jinhae and Gwangyang regions, each of which possess well-established infrastructure, were designated as FEZs in 2003. Optimum business and living conditions for foreign executives and staff will be guaranteed in these areas, which is the primary goal of the Free Economic Zone plan.

Incheon Free Economic Zone

The Incheon Free Economic Zone triangle includes Songdo Intelligent City, Yeongjong area including Incheon International Airport, and Cheongna area. Total area is 209 km² and projected population is about 475,000. Geographically, it is ideally located within 30 minutes of the Seoul metropolitan area connected by 3 highways and a subway system. There are also sea ports nearby and within the area.

The Songdo area, a 15-minute drive from Incheon International Airport (IIA) after the completion of the 2nd Airport Bridge, will be developed as the center for Asia-Pacific multinational headquarters, global business, and as a high value-added knowledge-based industrial complex. The area will be composed of international business center, knowledge-based industrial complex, and high-tech complex

The Yeongjong area will be developed as a functional city to support international logistics and the airport. The area will be composed of Incheon International Airport Free Trade Zone, Industrial and logistics cluster and Youngyu and Muui tourism & leisure complex. The Incheon International Airport (IIA) opened in March 2001 with 2 runways, a 312-acre passenger apron, a 31-acre cargo terminal and 60-acre boarding area. Currently, extension construction (2002-2008) is under way. It will include one runway, a 39-acre concourse, a 268-acre passenger apron, and an 81-acre international business center

The Cheongna area,will be developed as the new cradle of international business complex, world-class theme park by 2020. A landmark International Finance Center, residential complex for foreign workers, and other residential complexes will be established in this area. Plans also include a beautiful floral complex, spacious golf course, and sportsleisure complex.

Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone

The Busan-Jinhae FEZ is located at the heart of Korea's Southeastern Industrial belt. The FEZ consists of the New Port, Myeongji, Jisa, Dudong, and Ungdong areas. The FEZ will be a major area for logistics with Busan Port, Gimhae Airport, a KTX route, and a subway system. Specifically, the area has 16 million consumers in Busan, nearby Ulsan and Gyeongnam. It also takes charge of around 90% of shipbuilding industry, 40% of automobile industry, and 35% of machinery industry of the nation.

The Busan New Port area area will act as a center of state-of-the-art logistics, and be developed as the Free Trade Zone for attracting multinational logistics firms. It plans to build 30 container berths from 1995-2010. By the end of 2006, 6 container berths and 180-acre hinterland will be constructed

The Myeongji area is scheduled to be developed as manufacturing and R&D center including the Busan Science & Industrial Park.

The Dudong area area is developed to support the Busan-Jinhae FEZ with housings, schools and hospitals

The Ungdong area will be a leisure and recreational district for residents and employees in FEZ

Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone

TThe Gwangyang Bay FEZ will be a hub of logistics resource, trade, high-tech industry, tourism and leisure. This FEZ consists of Gwangyang, Yulchon, Shindeok, and Hwayang districts. The Gwangyang Bay FEZ is connected with 3 expressways, 8 roads, and 2 railways, thus accordingly providing efficient network for transportation and logistics hub. It has vast and affordable sites, providing the lowest-level of rent costs in Korea, abundant electricity and water resources with 9 power plants, 4 rivers, and 5 dams in or near the area.

The Gwangyang Port area iis the value-added integrated logistics hub. It will have total 33 berths by 2011 with exceptional incentives such as exemption of port dues, dockage, anchorage, and cargo wharfage.

In the Shindeok area,, foreign school, hospital, shopping center, and residential complexes for foreigners will be established.

The Hwayang area will be dedicated to the entertainment, tourism, and leisure industry.

The Ungdong area will be a leisure and recreational district for residents and employees in FEZ

The Hadong area will house leading R&D centers, steel, and shipbuilding companies
