Chungnam's Chrysanthemum Popular in Japan Before the Obon Period, Export Increases by 60%

(HONGSEONG=Yonhap News) The export of chrysanthemum produced in Chungnam-do to Japan showed a great increase just before the Obon period, which is the season for the largest consumption of the flower in Japan.

According to the Chungnam-do Agricultural Research & Extension, from July 27 to August 5, the amount of chrysanthemum export from the Province to Japan was 400 thousand, which is increased by 60% compared to that of last year same period.

The exported chrysanthemums, Yes Holic and Yes Ruby, were newly developed for Japanese consumers' preferences, and they can be cultivated in high temperature.

"The achievement is based on the high quality of chrysanthemum and high brand value gained from 12 years of export experience of 30 farms around Yesan, Buyeo, Dangjin and Taean area," said Park Ha-seung, Director of Chrysanthemum at Flower Research Institue, and added "We will carry out stronger marketing strategy for Japanese market at the International Flower Expo to be held in October in Tokyo, by introducing Chungnam's new species."

In the Province, 192 farms produce 24.9 million flowers annually. The amount of exports increased from 30,000 in 2016, 350,000 in 2009, 800,000 in 2012 and 1.2 million last year, showing great increase every year.
