Gongju Roasted Chestnut Festival was visited by 65,000 people

According to Yonhap News,

(GONGJU=Yonhap News) "2019 winter Gongju roasted chestnut festival" held from January 18 to 20 was visited by 65,000 people spending about KRW 320 million.

According to Gongju city on January 24, the number of visitors were counted at entrances, totaling 65, 476 visitors: 8,032 visited (12.3%) on the first day; 22,684 (35%) on the second day; and 34,760 (53%) on the third day.

This figure is more than 60% increase from 40,000 (estimated) visitors in the festival last year.

During the festival, the sales of chestnut reached KRW 158 million(25 ton), and processed chestnut product 105 million, adding up to KRW 321.5 million sales.

Spending per visitor was KRW 85,210, more than double from the previous year of KRW 45,443.

The most popular experience event was "grilling roast chestnut", picked by 28.7% of visitors.

The city plans to have a contract with the Tourism Sciences Society of Korea to conduct a survey on most liked programs and how to accurately count the number of visitors to reflect into next year's program.

However, the areas for improvement have also been pointed out, including the shortage of visitor's rest places and other facilities, disorderly pathways, and early sold out in some popular experience events due to insufficient raw materials.

Mayor Kim of Gongju city government said "we will hold an in-depth consultation in early February together with chestnut farmers, organizations for experience events, festival officials, event specialists, and volunteers" adding that "we will work out new ideas and improvement measures to have a better and successful festival".
