The area around Sajik-dong, Gwangju will be transformed into a place of history and culture


According to Yonhap News,

(GWANGJU=Yonhap News) The area around Sajik-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju will be transformed through urban regeneration.

It will be reborn as a vibrant place in which history and culture coexist, getting rid of old image.

On September 12, Nam-gu, Gwangju announced that it would inject KRW 22.3 billion in the area of 98,700 sq. meters around Sajik-dong by 2022 for large-scale urban regeneration project.

The project theme will be divided largely into residence regeneration and community regeneration.

KRW 7.9 billion will be put into a residence regeneration project to build a 5-story happy house building. The 1st and 2nd floors will be used for parking space and residents common area, while the 3rd-5th floors will have 22 households of happy housing.

The happy housing is a rental house for stability of the housing underprivileged, who are university students, newly married couples, the aged, among others.

Considering the characteristics of a village, consisted mostly of narrow alleys with a steep slope, will be repaired and crime prevention measures will be in place including installation of CCTV.

Separately, KRW 6.5 billion will be put into living culture regeneration project including development of space for history and culture.

Empty houses will be turned into artist houses, village bookstore, and healing gardens.

In particular, a project to generate incomes for residents will be pushed for, including village stores, guest houses, and village work stations.

KRW 7.8 billion will be set aside for community regeneration project to rejuvenate a village community.

Of them, KRW 5.9 billion will be used in building a residents community center.

The center will be consisted of two floors. In particular, there will be Art Zone where residents' art works are displayed and roof garden on the roof.

Namgu submitted this plan for urban regeneration plan to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on September 2.

A city official said, "Residents are aware of the need for urban regeneration project, and actively participating by proposing ideas, and others," adding that "We will reshape Sajik-dong by successfully implementing projects.".
