The Jeju Provincial Government is forging ahead in the future mobility sector by hosting aviation and space businesses and promoting urban air mobility (UAM). At the spring conference of the Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Sciences (KSAS) held on April 4th, Governor Oh Yeong-hoon presented Jeju’s policies to promote the space industry. He also proclaimed his vision for a new space era based in Jeju, committing to host promising space businesses and related organizations at Hawon Technocampus.

From the Optimal Region for the Space Industry to a Tourism UAM Industry Region

During the KSAS spring conference at Ramada Plaza Jeju on April 4th, Governor Oh stood before space entrepreneurs and academic experts to provide an overview of Jeju’s policies to promote the space industry, soliciting their investments and full support. Highlighting that the Korean government had exempted Hawon Technocampus from the total quantity regulation for industrial complexes, he reaffirmed his commitment to this initiative.

Governor Oh stated, “Since unveiling our plan for the private space industry and the tourism UAM industry, we have witnessed the enactment of new legislation and executed a demonstration project.” He continued, “We are organizing a consortium with the goal of achieving a pilot district designation next year. I hope that Jeju will be the first Asian region to receive this designation. I ask for your support and interest in this endeavor.”

In addition, the conference featured a discussion with special speaker Lee Jae-hyeong, head of the Korea Aerospace Administration Establishment Group, on expanding cooperation with Jeju's Korea Satellite Operations Center and Korean Space Weather Center. Following the conference, the Jeju government plans to sign an investment agreement with Hanwha Systems and will send a request to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for an exemption from the total quantity regulation for opportunity development zones and industrial complexes, establishing a plan for an opportunity development zone in April.

Jeju to Explore Ways to Achieve Sustainable Growth for All Private Space Businesses

Jeju Island hosted a joint policy forum with KSAS at Tamra Hall on the 8th floor of the same venue. The forum consisted of three sessions focused on Jeju's space policies, the offshore launch of space vehicles around Jeju, and Jeju's satellite industry. Participants in each session discussed past achievements and policy directions, including the first successful offshore launch of a civilian satellite in Korea, and explored ways to sustainably foster launch vehicle and satellite companies. KSAS, the largest academic organization in Korea dedicated to sharing the latest research trends and technical information from industries, academia, research institutions, the military, and government, saw more than 3,000 attendees, including its President Hwang Chang-jeon and other aerospace scholars and business officials, who presented 742 papers across 16 fields.
