First Organic Farming Special Zone in Korea to be Built in Chungbuk

Chungbuk-do (North Chungcheong Province) will form ‘organic farming special zone’ and ‘specialized complex in organic farming’ to promote the region into the hub of bio-agriculture.

 

According to Chungbuk on March 23rd, the Province plans to invest a total of about KRW 810 billion including the state fund of KRW 190 billion, the provincial fund of KRW 100 billion, and the private capital of KRW 510 billion to create ‘organic farming special zone’ and ‘specialized complex in organic farming’ for the production, processing, and distribution of organic agricultural products and the experience tourism.

 

The Province will form 23 organic food production complexes, Korea organic farming food valley (1.98 million ㎡), and 12 organic eco-villages, and nurture the regional strategic food industry (four projects) which utilizes eco-friendly organic agricultural goods and 80 organic livestock farming houses.

 

Chungbuk will invest KRW 40 billion to increase the number of ‘eco-friendly agricultural industrial complex in a broad area’ from four to six.

 

Jecheon City will be developed as an organic oriental medicine complex, Boeun-gun as an organic fruit production complex, Yeongdong-gun and Okcheon-gun as grape production clusters, Jincheon-gun and Chungju City as organic rice production complexes, Cheongju City and Cheongwon-gun as eco-friendly livestock clusters, and Goesan-gun as an organic food valley.

 

The Province will launch ‘the committee to create an organic farming special zone’ next month and devise and push ahead with a general plan for the organic farming special zone in phases.

 

An official of Chungbuk said “we have decided to create an organic farming special zone for the first time in Korea in order to aggressively tap into the rapidly growing organic food market and improve the competitiveness of the agricultural industry in green growth and against imported agricultural goods.”
