(SEOCHEON = Newsis) National Institute of Ecology (Ecoplex), the largest ecology research, exhibition and educational institution in Korea, will officially open on 27 December.
With the slogan of “healthier ecosystem, happier Korea”, Ecoplex plans to mark its opening with a ceremony with more than 1,000 attendances including the Prime Minister Jeong Hong-won, other officials of both public and private sectors and local residents.
Ecoplex is the first exhibition and research institution of legal personality, and it was developed as an alternative project of the development of the Janghang National Industrial Complex.
The institution is located in Seocheon-gun, which has many wonderful natural environments including Geum-gang estuary dam, the habitat for migratory birds, and the reed beds in Sinseong-ri.
In particular, Seocheon’s mud flat, which was preserved by the government’s efforts, was designated as the 13th Ramsar wetlands in Korea and recognized as an important natural asset across the world.
The Ministry of Environment invested a total of KRW 326.4 billion for five years since September 2007 and completed the construction of the institution in December 2012. The institution aims to carry out research on ecosystems under the climate change, preserve and procure the various species, provide the training and educations nationwide and promote the development of the local community.
The institution has prepared for its official opening since the relevant legislative bill regarding the operation of the institution was passed in the National Assembly in May 2013.
Ecoplex comprises the following sections: Ecorium, which offers the visitors opportunities to experience different climates of the world, a multi-purpose visitor center equipped with exhibition hall, observatory and theater and outdoor forests and gardens where visitors are able to experience the country’s indigenous ecosystems.
The exhibition hall with 45,000 plants of 4,600 species and 4,200 animals of 240 species is able to offer the systematic and in-depth exhibition and environmental experience educations.
Ecoplex is expected to be affiliated with the Marine-Bio Diversity Institute of Korea, which will officially open in 2014, to form the representative ecosystem exhibition course of the Chungcheong Province.
Meanwhile, the opening of Ecoplex suggested a paradigm of a mutually beneficial and sustainable development by constant communications with local residents, and is expected to provide blueprint for the establishment of the future exhibition and research institutions. ggy0119@newsis.com
