Selected for MCST public contest project, secured national budget of KRW 2.7 mn
To push for training of local MICE talents and marketing to attract international conferences

Gwangju-si secured the national budget of KRW 270 million as it was selected for '2022 International Business District Support Project' hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST).

Gwangju-si identified 8 projects, after 4 round of meetings from January to February, jointly with the Gwangju Tourism Foundation which is in charge of MICE, and Kim Daejung Convention (KDJ) Center which is in charge of operating international conference facilities. It applied for the MCST's public contest in March.

Major project plans include ▲ PR project targeting MICE-related press outlets to promote the city as a destination for international conference ▲ Gwangju MICE academia to foster local manpower specialized in MICE ▲ Project to obtain ISO 20121 for specialized conference facilities to have certification MICE qualification standard of International Organization for Standardization, and ▲ Kiosk installation project to enhance attendees convenience. For the projects, the city plans to invest KRW 540 million, including the municipal budget, from May to December.

Previously, Gwangju-si carried out a project to stimulate the international conference district over the past 3 years, developing a brand image of GJ MICE Park, 'a place good for international conference', as a second name for Sangmu district, raising global awareness as a city for MICE industry at home and abroad through Gwangju PR activities, and developing Gwangju MICE Park applications and website, as a platform for providing information in connection with Gwangju's tourism infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the MCST designated five business events districts to push for integration of facilities of related industries -accommodation, shopping, and performance-concentrated around international conference facilities. Currently, the area around KDJ Convention Center in Sangmu District, KINTEX in Goyang, Conventia in Songdo, Incheon, BEXCO in Busan, and EXCO in Daegu are designated as the international business districts.
