1. Reasons for Proposal
Scallops, sea pineapple, yellowtail, abalone, and yellow croaker are
five types of sea produce that are domestically consumed and imported in large
quantities. However, they are not subject to compulsory origin labeling in
restaurants where they are cooked before being sold or served. As a result,
consumers who purchase food cooked using such sea produce from a restaurant may
consume the food without knowing the place of origin of the ingredients, and
there is a high chance that the absence of origin labeling or false labeling
will lead to disguising imported ingredients as local produce. Accordingly, the
Amendment makes it compulsory to indicate the origin of the above five types of
sea produce, thereby protecting consumers’ right to know and establish safety
in the supply of fishery products.
