Int'l expo for electric vehicles to kick off this week

(SEOUL=Yonhap News) An international exhibition for electric vehicles (EVs) will be held in South Korea later this week, providing a chance for industry leaders to exchange views on the current and future directions for eco-friendly vehicle technologies, the organizers said Monday.

The 3rd International Electric Vehicle Expo (IEVE) will kick off on Friday for a seven-day run in the country's southern resort island of Jeju under the theme "Carbon-free Island and Smart Green City," according to the organizers.

The week-long event will bring together 145 companies which plan to showcase their latest EV technologies. Around 400 business leaders, policymakers and experts will join in diverse programs aimed at encouraging debate on where the EV industry stands and will be headed in the future.

Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp., Renault Samsung Motors Co., Nissan and BMW will be among the major automakers that will put their latest EV models on display.

In particular, South Korea's top automaker Hyundai Motor plans to unveil its dedicated EV model the Ioniq during the event, while Renault Samsung Motors will display its three electric car models.

The expo will also be joined by major battery makers such as LG Chem Ltd. and Samsung SDI Co., which will present to global leaders and visitors their latest technologies and products, the organizers said.

On the sidelines of the event, an international forum will be held to provide a chance for business leaders and experts to share their views on the standardization of batteries, charging methods and other items, an issue that could be the key to the fast advancement of the EV industry.
