(JEJU=Yonhap News) Jeju governor Won Hee-ryong said on April 24 that "Blockchain is the key technology in realizing a smart city. Jeju province has been endeavoring to realize the era of the fourth industrial revolution with a vision for smart island."

He conveyed such message through his keynote speech titled "the future of smart city depends on blockchain" at Blcokchain Tech&Business Summit 2019, held at Posco Tower in Seoul.

He pointed out that "Approaching the concept of smart city as just 'increasing efficiency of physical infrastructure through technology' is too narrow-sighted and simple," adding that "smart city is a solution to tense relationship between conflict values, development and preservation."

He continued to say that "the key resource of smart city is data. We need to collect and analyze data on every issue, thereby predicting the future, maximizing opportunities, and solving city problems due to overcrowding."

He emphasized that blockchain technology is the key in resolving various city issues and conflicting values-protection of personal information and data-based smart city.

At the event, organized by Bloter and Media, renowned speakers from Korea Internet&Security Agency, IBM, SKT, among others, had discussion on various topics of blockchain technology.
