20 companies proposed 16 projects for Jeju EV Regulation Free Zone Plan

(JEJU=Yonhap News) According to Jeju provincial government, 20 companies expressed intention to participate in 16 projects of Jeju Electric Vehicle (EV) regulation free zone plan.

The Jeju government held a public hearing to gather opinions of those from relevant industries on May 2.

The companies showed willingness to participate in Regulation Free Zone projects are: EMV, KAIST eco-friendly smart car research center, Jeju Motors, among others. They proposed such projects as developing an EV conversion kit and converting general cars to electric vehicles.

Also, other ideas proposed include manufacturing and sales of the super-compact EV, and self-driving EV services.

The provincial government plans to confirm the EV Regulation Free Zone Plan by May 30, taking into account opinions suggested during the public hearing and Regional Innovation Council scheduled for May 10.

The Ministry of SMEs and startups plans to designation of Regulation Free Zone by the end of July after deliberation and resolution by the Regulation Free Zone Committee.

The areas planned for Regulation Free Zone will be as large as 4.9 square meters including Jeju Science Park Complex 1 and 2, Jeju University, Korea Polytechnics Jeju Campus, Jeju International University, and Jeju Innovation City. The designation period is 4 years.
