According to Yonhap News,

(DAEJEON=Yonhap News) A technology using wireless charging system for public transportation will be introduced at international electric vehicle (EV) event in Jeju island.

On May 3, KAIST announced that the 2nd ASEAN 10 Countries EV Forum is scheduled for May 7 at International Convention Center (ICC JEJU).

It has been prepared as a prior event for the 6th International Electric Vehicle EXPO (IEVE), opening on the following day.

Hyundai Motors and KAIST will deliver keynote speeches at the forum, while Philippine, Thailand, and Vietnam will also be present to share the status of EV policy and technological progress in respective countries.

Je Woo Kim, ISK Visiting Professor of Institute for Startup KAIST, who previously served as a VP for Qualcomm and currently CEO of WiPowerOne, will present measures to apply wireless charging system to public transportation.

WiPowerOne explained that the key is Shaped Magnetic Field In Resonance (SMFIR) that transfer energy wirelessly.

To supply power, magnetic field generated from cable is converted through collector wirelessly to electric energy.

Professor Kim said that this technology developed by KAIST can replace the current charing system, which has limits on the compatibility of charging plug, space for installing charger, and charging waiting time, etc.

A KAIST official said "Since developing wireless charging technology in 2009 for the first time in the world, OLEV (On-line Electric Vehicle) is currently in operation in Gumi and KAIST," adding that "Daejeon city also prepares to introduce three such buses in Daedeok Innopolis."
