Jeju-do was certified for UNESCO Global Geoparks for the fourth time in a row.

The province announced on Dec. 20 that it was recertified as Global Geopark with the confirmation by UNESCO Global Geoparks, thereby maintaining the status until 2026.

On Dec. 9, UNESCO conducted an on-site evaluation of Jeju-do and had the seventh examination by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council this month.

The result of the UNESCO examination is known to highly evaluate that Jeju thoroughly carried out the recommendations presented by UNESCO in 2018 and also successfully held the ninth UNESCO Global Geoparks general meeting in Jeju despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

This time, the organization additionally suggested that the province ramp up the geological heritage promotion by linking biodiversity with cultural heritage, expand more convenient facilities, and strengthen education on geological disasters.

Jeju was the very first Global Geopark certified by UNESCO in 2020.

Meanwhile, the Global Geoparks is one of three official UNESCO programs in the field of science, along with Natural World Heritage and Biosphere Reserves.
