According to Yonhap News,

The construction of Hanwha Space Center, by Hanwha System, at the "Hawon Techno Campus" (formerly the site of Tamna University) in Seogwipo, Jeju, seems to become a reality.

According to Jeju-do on September 20, Jeju-do and Hanwha System are speeding up necessary procedures with the goal of starting construction of the Hanwha Space Center at the Hawon Techno Campus in the first half of next year.

To this end, they plan to go through administrative procedures such as urban planning review, plant establishment approval, and others from December this year.

The Hanwha Space Center will have a low-orbiting satellites AIT (Assembly, Integration, Test), which is an infrastructure for the space industry. The satellite AIT facility refers to a place where assembly, and function and performance tests are conducted.

When the construction of satellite AIT facility is completed, low-orbiting small satellites will be produced in Jeju.

Hanwha System is considering not only to use Jeju-made satellites in Korea but also to export them to countries that do not have satellites.

Small satellites are the most actively researched, developed, and produced products in the space industry. For example, SpaceX (an American space exploration company) also uses them for its Starlink service.

Earlier in July, Hanwha System signed a business agreement with Jeju-do, announcing a plan to build a Hanwha Space Center (10,000㎡ in size) by investing tens of billions of won.

The Hawon Techno Campus will be created using the site of former Tamna University in Hawon-dong, Seogwipo-si.

Tamna University opened in 1996 when Hawon villiage donated its ranches. However, it closed in 2012 when it merged with another university, leaving the site (318,835㎡) unattended for a long time. Jeju-do purchased the site of former Tamna University as common land in 2016."
