According to Yonhap News,

Jeju-do and Denmark agreed to cooperate and pursue joint development for the energy transition toward a green hydrogen economy.

Jeju's governor met with Danish Minister Lars Aagaard for Climate, Energy and Utilities and Danish Ambassador to Korea Svend Oling at the FKI Conference Center in Yeouido, Seoul on March 6 to discuss various measures for cooperation focused on offshore wind power and the hydrogen economy.

Jeju's governor said, "Korean companies, who want to realize RE100, show great interest in Jeju's wind power and hydrogen energy," adding that "Jeju has been accelerating and leading the transition to the hydrogen economy, with producing green hydrogen and operating hydrogen buses."

He also mentioned that "since the first wind power commercialization of Jeju used the Danish generators in 1998, they have now come to account for 33% of the total wind power generation in Jeju," saying "Denmark and Jeju are already cooperating, and will have an opportunity for peaceful prosperity through bolder plans going forward."

Minister Aagaard said "we highly regard Jeju's strategy and vision for hydrogen and offshore wind power, which is leading a green transition," adding that "as Jeju and Denmark see eye-to-eye in renewable energy strategies, we hope to seek opportunities for cooperation in the offshore wind power generation and the green hydrogen."

Jeju expects that the bilateral cooperation between Korea-Denmark will play a pivotal role in the energy transition policy that goes beyond energy independence to the green hydrogen economy.

Denmark has the highest renewable energy supply rate of more than 80% in the world, and it is regarded as the world's best in terms of penetration rate and industrial competitiveness in the wind power industry.

Jeju-do has the highest renewable energy generation rate of 19.2%, with the first offshore wind power farm created in Korea in 2017, and plan to build a large-scale public-led offshore wind farm.
