Jeju-based aerospace technology startup, SPEX, selected for Deep-tech TIPS

On November 12, the Jeju Creative Economy Innovation Center(Jeju CCEI) announced that SPEX, an aerospace technology startup, has been selected for Deep-tech TIPS by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

SPEX, which develops observation instruments mounted on satellites, plans to secure advance the 3D hyperspectral technology with securing KRW 1.5 billion for research and development.

SPEX was co-founded by Professor Seongcheol Yoon of Seoul National University‘s Department of Physics and Astronomy and Principal Researcher Woongseop Jeong of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute.

Professor Yoon, renowned for spectral data analysis research, is a best fit for the commercialization using hyperspectral data, while researcher Jeong led the development of the 3rd generation NISS (Near-infrared Imaging Spectrometer Star formation history).

Researcher Jeong also participated in the development of SPHEREx, a space telescope development project by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) until recently.

SPEX is the first investment recipient of the “Jeju Early-Stage Startup Fund,” in which Jeju Provincial Government, Kakao, Jeju National University Holdings, the Korea Social Value and Solidarity Foundation are participating.

The director of the Jeju CCEI said "it will be an important milestone in moving towards the center of the aerospace technology industry. We will actively support so that the innovative technologies and potential of SPEX to achieve success in the market."
