Jeju-do will foster the local "Food Tech" industry in earnest, including nurturing 50 food production companies that utilize 100% renewable energy (RE100).
On January 10, Jeju-do announced its strategy to create a "Jeju Green+Food Tech Ecosystem," which aims to foster the growth of the Food Tech sector.
The strategy sets ambitious goals, including nurturing 50 K-RE100 companies with sales exceeding KRW 5 billion by 2035, producing 5 listed companies, expanding the province's food industry sales, achieving USD 50 million in exports, and creating 500 new jobs.
To achieve these objectives, Jeju-do plans to develop specialized products using 31 traditional Jeju food items, recognized by the Slow Food International in its "Ark of Taste," as well as winter crops. The province will also establish a system for customized meal planning based on individual health data.
In addition, it also plans to collaborate with the Jeju Development Corporation (JDC) to introduce artificial intelligence (AI)-driven autonomous manufacturing processes for mandarin juice concentrate and establish a smart processing center by 2027. This will allow year-round supply of winter vegetables to the food market.
Additionally, Jeju will develop AI-based personalized tourism and food information services, and ensure ensure stable supply of local food ingredients through the Integrated Support Center. The province will also enhance consumer convenience through mobile ordering and payment services.
Furthermore, Jeju will strengthen the competitiveness of the food industry ecosystem by building innovative infrastructure, such as a "Green Bio Venture Campus" and a "Food Tech Research Support Center," in the Jeju Advanced Science & Technology Complex.
Jeju is already producing Korea’s first "RE100 Eggs" using renewable energy, and plans to supply winter radishes year-round based on AI and ozone storage technology.
Jeju-do signed MOU with three local universities, six government agencies, and nine leading Food Tech companies to collaborate on developing the Food Tech ecosystem today.
Food Tech, a combination of "food" and "technology," refers to a new industry that integrates advanced technologies such as AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and biotechnology (BT) throughout the entire food production, distribution, and consumption process.
