According to Yonhap News,
On April 6, Jeju-do announced that 30 fattening horses raised in Jeju will be exported to Japan, marking the first-ever export of horses in the history of Jeju’s horse industry.
This export follows the revision and approval of the export hygiene conditions for horses being exported from Korea to Japan in November last year, making it the first such case from Jeju.
The horses being exported are descendants of Belgian and Percheron breeds, which were originally introduced for fattening purposes. They have been improved for meat production, with excellent meat quality and marbling, making them highly favored in the Japanese market, according to the province.
The horses will depart from Jeju Port, pass through Busan Port, and then be transported to Japan.
To prepare for the export, the province formed a task force (TF) with relevant agencies such as the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency’s Jeju Regional Office and the Animal Hygiene Test Laboratory to handle the quarantine procedures.
The horses destined for export completed 30-day domestic quarantine at designated quarantine facilities in the province.
The export will be carried out by Dongbu Livestock through the export-specialized company Bouvry Korea. The exported horses will undergo a fattening process at a local company in Japan before being slaughtered and distributed.
An official from the Jeju province stated, "With this first export to Japan, the Jeju horse industry has a new opportunity for growth. We will continue to support the promotion of Jeju horses' excellence abroad and diversify the export market."
