Jeju-do to foster the food tech industry in earnest with investing KRW 313.7 bn over 5 yrs
Jeju-do is focusing on developing the 'Food Tech' industry as a key future growth sector.
On August 28th, Jeju-do held its first Food Tech Industry Development Committee meeting, where the 'Jeju Food Tech Industry Development Master Plan (2025–2029)' was reviewed and approved.
The master plan is a comprehensive strategy to foster the convergence of Jeju’s agricultural and food industries with advanced food tech technologies, aiming to cultivate it as a high-value future industry. The vision is to foster " Glocal Food Tech Industry as Clean Jeju Future Growth Engine" with long-term goals set for 2035.
Key objectives include fostering five listed companies, achieving 50 K-RE100 companies, surpassing USD 50 million in exports, training 300 people linked to employment and entrepreneurship, and developing 500 professionals in convergence fields, along with commercializing four core food tech technologies.
To implement this, Jeju-do plans to invest a total of KRW 313.7 billion by 2029.
The four key strategies are: developing new foods using specialized resources, standardizing environmentally friendly smart manufacturing, advancing the food service and restaurant industries, and establishing an ecosystem for upstream and downstream industries. These strategies are supported by 16 action plans.
The province will establish detailed annual implementation plans to systematically expand the base of the food tech industry.
Jeju will identify and nurture budding food tech startups, operate specialized workforce training programs linked with the Regional Innovation System & Education (RISE), and create practical job opportunities through employment and entrepreneurship programs.
Additionally, through active R&D collaborations among industry, academia, research institutions, and government, Jeju aims to accelerate technological innovation, strengthen its global market presence, and enhance the international competitiveness of Jeju's agricultural and food industries, thus securing sustainable economic growth for the region.
The Food Tech Industry Development Committee was established as an advisory and deliberation body under the 'Ordinance on Jeju Food Tech Industry Development and Support,' and is composed of 15 experts from academia, industry, research institutions, and administration.
