According to Yonhap News,

The first international freight shipping route connecting Jeju and Qingdao, China, was inaugurated on October 16.

On this day, the first ship, the 'SMC Rizhao,' departed from the Qingdao International Cruise Terminal and headed for Jeju Port.

The container ship 'SMC Rizhao' carried 40 TEUs including 26 containers of PET chips, the raw material for Samdasu PET bottles, along with other goods such as stones, household products, and machinery. It is expected to arrive at Jeju Port on October 18th, and a ceremony will be held to commemorate the ship’s first arrival at the port.

This container ship will carry 6 TEUs of export goods, including Jeju's Samdasu water and frozen seafood, and return to Qingdao Port.

The new route will operate every Monday, departing from Qingdao, arriving in Jeju on Wednesday, and returning to Qingdao on Saturday.

With the opening of this route, Jeju Port will see its first regular international container shipping service in 57 years since it was designated as a trade port in 1968.

The opening of the route marks a significant milestone for Jeju Port, which is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, laying the foundation for it to become a full-fledged international trade hub. This new route is expected to significantly improve Jeju’s export-import logistics environment, with an estimated 62.3% reduction in logistics costs and shorter transportation times.

Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon and other members of the Jeju delegation attended the 'New Route Inauguration Ceremony' between Jeju and Qingdao, where they pledged to expand logistics and tourism exchanges.
