Jeju-do utilized drones for goods delivery and safety management, conducting 29 projects over 4 yrs
Since 2021, a total of 29 drone-related projects have been underway in Jeju, which has been designated as a Drone Special Free Zone.
On November 16, Jeju-do announced that it was selected for the third extension of the Drone Special Free Zone designation in June this year, following the first in June 2021 and the second in 2023. The third extension period will last until July 2027.
As a result of being designated a Drone Special Free Zone, Jeju is now conducting 29 drone-related projects, including delivery of goods to islands, search operations for missing persons, and management of event safety.
Starting with the 2024 "Jeju Waterbomb" festival, Jeju has deployed wired drones capable of staying airborne for more than six hours in 12 festivals.
Through drones, Jeju-do has been able to conduct real-time monitoring, analyze crowd density, and track the number of event participants.
In addition, starting in May, about 170 drone flights have been made for logistics improvements to the surrounding islands, delivering 330 items and offering practical services.
Items delivered to the islands include food deliveries, parcels, and personal items, while items sent from the islands to the mainland include seafood such as cockles, raw fish soup, boiled shellfish, and sea urchin roe.
Drones have also been used for missing person searches and for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experience events.
Within the Drone Special Free Zone, procedures such as drone test flight permits, safety certifications, flight approvals, and radio compatibility evaluations have been streamlined or exempted.
