Jeju Embarks on Major Energy Transition, Investing KRW 44.8 Billion in 75 Projects This Year

[JEJU = NEWSIS] By Yang Young-jeon = Jeju Province announced on the 5th that it will invest 44.8 billion won this year in 75 projects to accelerate its energy transition and achieve carbon neutrality by 2035.

To further speed up the transition, the province will implement projects centered on five key priorities.

Major investment areas include accelerating energy transition (23 projects, 20.4 billion won), promoting distributed energy (14 projects, 15.7 billion won), diversifying renewable energy sources (13 projects, 5.0 billion won), fostering the offshore wind industry (4 projects, 0.05 billion won), and sharing renewable energy generation profits with local residents through the wind power fund (21 projects, 3.6 billion won).

Key initiatives include power-to-heat (P2H) projects that convert electricity into thermal energy for everyday use, along with demand-responsive thermal storage heat pump pilot programs (13.9 billion won); construction of LPG pipeline networks at the township and village level (17.5 billion won); renewable energy convergence support projects (4.9 billion won); a RE100+ platform pilot project for social welfare facilities (1.2 billion won); and energy support programs for vulnerable groups (0.6 billion won).

Kim Nam-jin, Director of Jeju’s Innovation Industry Bureau, said, “In step with the government’s decarbonization strategy, we are expanding investment this year to accelerate the energy transition. By promoting P2H-centered electrification in daily life and expanding distributed energy, we aim to deliver tangible benefits for residents and establish Jeju as a leading model for energy transition in Korea.”
