According to Newsis,
[Jeju = Newsis] Reporter Yang Young-jeon – Jeju Province has officially launched the nation's first "RE100 (100 percent Renewable Energy) Tangerines," produced exclusively using renewable energy.
On the afternoon of the 26th, the province held the "Jeju RE100 Tangerine Proclamation Ceremony" at the Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services, marking the official start of shipments for tangerines produced through 100 percent self-consumed renewable energy.
RE100 tangerines represent the first instance in South Korea where renewable energy has been fully integrated into the agricultural sector. These tangerines are grown using only renewable energy-based infrastructure—including solar power, air-source heat pumps, and Energy Storage Systems (ESS)—throughout the entire cultivation process.
Key Milestones in Jeju’s Green Transition
The Agricultural Research and Extension Services has been conducting the RE100 Tangerine Pilot Project since last year. They successfully established a system using solar power (panel and film types), air-source heat pumps, and ESS units utilizing recycled batteries, completing the verification and certification for 100 percent renewable energy usage.
Jeju has previously demonstrated the feasibility of clean energy transitions in the livestock sector by producing RE100 eggs and RE100 milk. The launch of RE100 tangerines signifies a strategic expansion of Jeju’s carbon-neutral policies from livestock to fruit cultivation.
Future Plans and Expansion
- Pilot Expansion: Starting this month, the province will begin distributing the RE100 production model to two tangerine farms already equipped with solar power facilities.
- Budget Allocation: KRW 200 million (approx. USD 150,000) has been allocated in this year's main budget for this initiative.
- Branding: The province plans to strengthen the market competitiveness of eco-friendly Jeju produce through RE100 certification, labeling, and specialized branding.
"RE100 tangerines are proof that Jeju’s energy transition has taken root not just in power plants and factories, but in our actual farm fields," said Jeju Governor Oh Young-hun. "Jeju tangerines will now compete based on the value of 'how' they were produced."
