Jeju Province to Invest KRW 3.82 Tn Over 5 Years in AI and Energy Transition

(Jeju = Yonhap News) Reporter Byun Ji-chul – Jeju Province will invest KRW 3.8223 trillion over the next five years to nurture future industries, centered on artificial intelligence (AI) and energy transition.

Jeju Province announced on the 6th that it has formulated detailed implementation plans for 15 pledge projects under the jurisdiction of the Innovative Industry Bureau of the 9th popular electoral administration, focusing on intensively fostering the AI, energy, biotechnology, and aerospace industries.

By sector, the investment allocations consist of:
- Energy: KRW 1.5524 trillion
- AI and Data Transition: KRW 1.3480 trillion
- Science and Technology Infrastructure: KRW 646.5 billion
- Aerospace Industry and Smart Cities: KRW 177.3 billion
- Biotech Industry: KRW 99.0 billion

The province plans to construct a renewable energy-based green AI data center alongside the Jeju Global AI Hub, while promoting offshore wind power, the vitalization of distributed energy, and the introduction of an electricity forecasting system. Furthermore, it will push forward with the establishment of the Jeju Institute of Science and Technology (JIST) and a joint campus uniting four major national institutes of science and technology.

By organizing a policy advisory group and working groups composed of experts, Jeju Province aims to flesh out the execution roadmap for each pledge. It intends to prioritize the rollout of citizen-tangible projects within this year, including the introduction of the electricity forecasting system and pilot services for AI administrative assistants.

Kim Nam-jin, Director-General of the Innovative Industry Bureau of Jeju Province, stated, "We will concrete our execution plans by gathering a broad range of opinions from citizens and experts, striving to generate tangible results starting from the very first year of the 9th popular electoral administration."
