(JEJU = Newsis) — A project concept to establish a 40 MW data center designed to absorb Jeju Island's surplus renewable energy into artificial intelligence (AI) computing demand has entered its planning stage.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on August 7 that it has launched a project planning study for the "Jeju Regional AX (AI Transformation) Transformation" initiative to drive AI-based industrial innovation and strengthen regional competitiveness.

The "Jeju Regional AX Transformation" is a national project spearheaded by the Ministry of Science and ICT. Project planning is underway this year across three regions: Jeju, South Chungcheong Province, and Gangwon Province.

The project concept centers on three key pillars:
- Establishing a renewable energy-based 40 MW "Green AI" data center
- Accelerating AI Transformation (AX) across Jeju's specialized industries, such as renewable energy, aerospace, and bio-health
- Nurturing specialized talent in AI Transformation (AX)

The Green AI Data Center is planned to perform a dual function: absorbing surplus power from renewable energy sources while supplying the high-performance computing infrastructure needed for the AI transformation of specialized local industries.

Separately, as a smaller-scale AI data center being constructed under the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises and Startups' "Region-Led AI Transformation" project nears completion at the end of this year, Jeju Province is consulting with central government ministries to leverage this facility for a Proof of Concept (PoC) project to validate a 100 percent Renewable Energy (RE100)-based data center model.

Kim Nam-jin, Director General of the Innovation Industry Bureau of Jeju Province, stated, "Centered on the Green AI Data Center, we will validate a sustainable AI Transformation (AX) ecosystem and present a model that can be scaled nationwide and globally."
