Jeju Province to “Grow Jeju Economy into Global Market”

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province explained the direction of provincial administration this year at a conference held at Jeju Welcome Center on January 8th.

 

The Province announced that it will focus on growing the Jeju economy into a global market with global competitiveness; converging the high-tech green industries such as new and renewable energy; improving the value of Jeju’s environmental assets and creating a city that exude Jeju’s own culture; converging the clean primary industry and high technologies; realizing Jeju welfare community and globalizing Jeju culture; and providing citizen-oriented efficient administration.

 

An official of Jeju said “we aim to increase the number of export companies in Jeju from 114 last year to 300 by 2014. To that end, we will be committed to a four-year project for export.” He added “the export support system will be strengthened by installing Jeju office of the Korea International Trade Association, etc.”

 

He also said “this year, the construction of maritime wind farm which can be associated with high-quality fish farming and tourism will start in earnest,” and added “the distribution rate of new and renewable energy was 4.8% last year, but this figure will be raised to 11% by 2014.”

 

Jeju will maintain its status as a livestock epidemic free zone by implementing intensive preventive measures. A cluster for the tangerine industry will be built, and the horse and open sea fish farm industries will be nurtured to achieve the goal of exporting agricultural, maritime, and livestock products worth KRW 56 billion.

 

A promotion team for 2012 World Conservation Congress (WCC) will be expanded within this month to lay the groundwork for the successful hosting of WCC. The Province will push forward the free day care for infants and preschoolers and expand childcare facilities at work in a bid to increase a low birth rate.

 

About 170 people including Jeju Provincial Governor U Geun-min, senior public officials, heads of 43 eup, myeon, dong participated in the conference to have presentations and discussions on strategies to attract 2 million foreigners, measures to foster the food industry, vitalization of the economy, and promotion of the export industry.
