Jeju Island, Selected as the 2015 World Aquaculture Society

According to Yonhap News,

The 35th World Aquaculture Society(WAS) will be held in Jeju island in 2015.

In the 31st WAS held in Natal of Brazil, the chairman and society members unanimously selected Jeju island as the host of 2015 WAS.

The decision was made after evaluating access and capability of three candidate sites including Jeju, Indonesia, and Panama.

For promotional activities, Jeju Province dispatched a team composed of 12 key members to Natal.

WAS is a non-profit organization established in 1970. With 4,000 members from 94 countries, the society has a goal of contributing to the development of world aquaculture industry by exchanging information, technology and knowledge on aquaculture. Professor Bae Seung-cheol in Pukyong National University served as the chairman from 2006 to 2008.

Jeju Province expects that hosting the event will generate about 10 billion won of revenues and will help increase the export of cultured flatfish.

WAS was held in 2008 in Busan.
