The U.S.-renowned private school Saint Johnsbury Academy signed an agreement with the Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC) last Thursday to establish an international school in Jeju in September 2015.
Director Byeon Jeong-il of the JDC, Jeju Governor of Environment and Economy Kim Seon-u, President Thomas Lovett and Executive Director Edward Zuccaro of Saint Johnsbury Academy attended the signing ceremony.
Under the agreement, Saint Johnsbury Academy will build Saint Johnsbury Academy Jeju, a co-education school that can accommodate 1,250 students from the 4th 12th grade.
Saint Johnsbury Academy Jeju will offer the same curriculum just like the U.S. campus does.
Founded in 1842, Saint Johnsbury Academy is a pre-university school in New England, America.
The academy offers advancement placement programs for 22 subjects certified by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and English as a Second Language Program for non-native English speaking students and other various programs depending on the academic performance of each student.
If established, the academy will attract not only Korean students but Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese students, considering Asian parents' strong preference to American students, the JDC expects.
Currently, three international schools including the UK's North London Collegiate School, the public international school KIS Jeju and Canada's Branksome Hall Asia are established in Jeju English Education City.
