Jeju Special Self-Governing Province will form an environmental advisory group to raise the quality of Jeju’s environmental policy to the international level. The group, comprising global experts, will start working in September.

To be certified as the first environmental capital of the world in 2020, Jeju will staff the group with 50 world-class experts in the fields of environment, economy and society. With members located worldwide, the group will work via cyber conferences to provide counsel on main issues and policies.

Last month, the provincial government requested that the president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recommend appropriate experts for the group. It plans to send letters of appointment as an advisor to the 35 experts from 27 nations who took part in the World Conservation Congress (WCC) in Jeju last September.

The environmental advisory group will help Jeju become a global environmental capital by providing consulting on many issues, such as how to maintain biodiversity and environmental welfare. It will also promote the beautiful natural assets of Jeju that have been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
