Jeju and IBM Korea held a kick-off ceremony for 2013 Smarter Cities Challenge Jeju last Monday.

IBM will send six experts to Jeju Island by June 14 to gather and analyze information on five areas of industry, tourism, culture, environment and international prestige and propose measures to enhance brand value of Jeju.

Technology and services invested to foster Jeju into a smarter city will exceed USD 400 thousand.

Jeju was named one of the participants in 2013 Smarter Cities Challenge. The island applied with a program to make Jeju Island as one of the global brands with its history of winning the UNESCO award in natural science for three consecutive years.

Smarter Cities Challenge is a grant program in which IBM awards a total USD 50 million worth of technology and services to 100 cities around the world to lead the transfer to smarter cities.

Jeju expects the program will attract more tourists and investment and help Jeju to become an international city.
