Jeju city and Heilongjiang Province of China will sign an agreement for friendship cities today in Harbin.

Representatives from Jeju Island, including Jeju Mayor Woo Keun-min, will also attend the signing ceremony to hold an investment information session.

The relationship came to the table when representatives of Heilongjiang Province visited Jeju September 2010, and was discussed on working-level in 2011.

Heilongjiang Province is a region close to northeastern China and Russia. It is where the Chinese investment in Jeju has begun including China’s the first foreign direct investment in the tourism sector.

The province also participated in the Jeju Youth Forum for consecutive three years from 2010, and arose as a major route to Korea with Jeju-Harbin flights serviced from June 2010.

A local TV broadcasting station also held a special program celebrating the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and China in which marrying couples visited Jeju in groups to have Mayor Woo as an officiator.

The friendship relationship between Jeju and Heilongjiang Province is expected to increase exchanges in many fields including economy, tourism, culture, youth and women and add momentum to promote Chinese investment and tourists, as well as grow exports.
