(JAEJU = Newsis) The South Korean government will invest KRW 22.4 billion in 2014 for development work of rural water in Jaeju.

In response to the demand of expansion of budget on Jaeju rural water development project which was raised by parliamentary inspection, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will invest KRW 22.4 billion, which is an increase of KRW 9.8 billion from 2013.

Jaeju’s multipurpose water development project aims to prevent damages to the crops due to drought, localized heavy rain by supplying rural water. It also attempts to secure Jeju’s subsurface water, which reached its limits of development amount and suffers deterioration, by replacing it with spring water and surface water for agricultural purpose.

Four multipurpose rural water development projects are currently carried out in Jeju, including the project in Seongeup region which commenced in 2003 and the project in Seolim which is in its final design process.

Due to lack of budget, only the amount of KRW 3 billion has been invested annually per region nationwide. Jaeju struggled to develop multipurpose water as its low record rate of process throughout its regions including Seongeup (68.4 percent), Ongpo (49.7 percent), Hamdeok (21.4 percent) and Seolim (1.1 percent).

The increase in budget will allow Jeju to secure KRW 5.6 billion for its four regions, which is more than double of the national average of KRW 3.2 billion. This will help Jeju to prevent further delays of projects.
