Jeju has been promoting the “Carbon Free Island 2020 (CFI 2030)” policy for the past decade intending to achieve carbon neutrality in response to the climate crisis. Today, the island is the greatest generator of renewable energy and has the biggest number of EVs in Korea. Against this backdrop, Jeju Island decided to take joint measures with cities and local governments around the world against the climate crisis.

Jeju Island and the Jeju Provincial Council attended the Global Climate Coalition for Carbon Neutrality (an unofficial coalition of cities and local governments) held at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, on November 7. There, they once again confirmed the vision and will to achieve carbon neutrality in Jeju Island.

Acting Jeju governor Koo Man-Seop introduced carbon neutral policies and the achievements of Jeju Island and emphasized the importance of global coalition and cooperation for fully achieving the goal. “Clean technologies can supply electricity demand in Jeju by 100% with renewable energy, which can also be sent to other regions. However, we need strong cooperation among local governments to achieve this goal,” said Koo.

“Also, the reason why we can enjoy the glaciers on Rainier Mountain in Washington and the magnificent scenery on Hallasan Mountain is because of your active implementation of carbon-neutral policies. Jeju will actively cooperate with the global climate coalition to preserve all the glaciers across the world, let alone Hallasan Mountain and Rainier Mountain,” he added.

The members of the global climate coalition will be promoting climate & clean energy solutions and policy development capacity of local communities through education and investment, with an aim to achieve the goal jointly. Also, they will be joining hands to achieve carbon neutrality (by 2030), pulling up renewable energy’s share in the entire electricity demand by 100% (by 2045), forbidding sales of internal combustion engine vehicles (by 2030), replacing all buses with ZE (zero emission) buses (by 2030), replacing all compact cars and medium and large vehicles used in the public sector with ZE vehicles (by 2035), and reducing mileage.

Meanwhile, through the joining of the global climate coalition, Jeju Island is expected to see effects such as strengthening Jeju’s international status in response to the climate crisis, expanding cooperation in sustainable development between cities and local governments around the world, and seeking out measures for exporting Jeju’s CFI 2030 policy.
