Jeju plans to run EV charging stations where drivers can charge their electronic vehicles with sunlight.

The KRW 3 billion project (1 billion from state, province, and private sector each) “Sunlight EV Charging Station” was designed as a part of the business to foster EV charging services through the cooperation of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, Jeju Island, Jeju Energy Corporation, and a private consortium.

The charging station installed at the Aewol-eup bus terminus in Jeju-si and JEJU World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo-si allows drivers to directly charge their vehicle with electricity generated with the solar power generator built in accordance with the special regulatory exception approved last September, without having to use the transmission and distribution network of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The current Electric Utility Act in Korea prohibits the direct charge of renewable energy to electric vehicles.

As drivers can now directly charge their car with electricity generated by the solar power facility, a service that enables them to charge during times of high electricity consumption with the energy saved in the ESS is also scheduled to be launched.

“We will strive to make EVs run on renewable energy by verifying and advancing the convergence project of renewable energy (solar power), energy storage system (ESS), and EV charging system,” said the Jeju government.
