As Jeju commits to the energy transition towards carbon neutrality, diverse research and development organizations in the province are unitingto concentrate on advancing sector coupling and integration (SCI). SCI is a crucial technology essential for efficiently promoting and utilizing renewable energy. Jeju Province envisions that the development of high-efficiency power-to-heat (P2H), advanced power-to-gas (P2G), and core technologies for an SCI demonstration platform will significantly boost the utilization of renewable energy resources, contributing to the successful realization of carbon neutrality.

Key Renewable Energy Technology Being Developed in Jeju

Sector coupling and integration (SCI) involves integrating different energy sectors andconverting surplus electricity during renewable energy production into other forms like heat or gas for storage and utilization. This technology addresses the intermittency and volatility of renewable energy.SCI is expected to tackle the mismatch between electricity demand patterns and renewable energy generation patterns in the volatile renewable energy market, particularly in sources like solar and wind power. It is also expected to play a role in securing power stability through power system stabilization in the future.

The SCI Convergence Research Project, selected by the National Research Council of Science & Technology under the Ministry of Science and ICT in June 2023, will bring together researchers from various organizations in a shared research space established in Jeju. The Convergence Research Center of Sector Coupling & Integration, with the participation of research and development institutions and businesses, including the Korea Institute of Energy Research, aims to develop core technologies for heterogeneous sector coupling to expand the acceptance of variable renewable energy (VRE). Jeju Province plans to formulate local policies and regulations for sector coupling. This project will run for six years, from July 2023 to June 2029, with a total investment of KRW 46.1 billion (40.1 billion from the national budget, 2 billion from the local budget, and 4 billion from the private sector).

Governor Oh Younghun said, "It is very meaningful that the Convergence Research Center of Sector Coupling & Integration, aiming to secure world-leading SCI core technologies to respond to Jeju's renewable energy output control, has launched in Jeju." He added, "Expanding flexible resources, including sector coupling, will enhance the acceptance of renewable energy, resolving output control issues and bringing us closer to realizing a carbon-neutral society. I hope that the Convergence Research Center of Sector Coupling & Integration willsuccessfully develop core sector coupling technologies that integrate energy and the environment, contributing to the advancement and prosperity of the carbon-neutral economy.
