According to Yonhap News,
The Research Institute for Technology of Ship and Offshore Plant of Pusan National University said Busan has been selected as the host city of the 2016 Conference on International Offshore Plant and Artic Engineering at the 2012 conference, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"Busan beat Turkey's Istanbul, the U.K.'s Glasgow and Norway's Trondheim to be unanimously chosen as the host city," said a researcher of the Pusan National University.
The annual conference has evolved into the world's largest offshore-related conference with about 2,000 people from 50 countries attending, since its foundation in 1986.
Especially remarks by John Mikeleson, chairman of the conference, that "I
was impressed by enthusiastic presentation by representatives of Korea, a global
leading player in the shipbuilding and offshore plants" was a decisive
factor behind Korea's designation as the host city, according to the researcher.
The research institute has aggressively engaged in marketing to make Busan win the bid for the conference in collaboration with Busan City, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Korea Shipbuilders' Association and Busan Exhibition & Convention Center.
The 35th Conference on International Offshore Plant and Artic Engineering, scheduled to be held in 2016, will discuss new marine energy and green shipbuilding industry.
