Busan City seems to accelerate the designation of the western Busan area as a special R&D zone.
The city held a public hearing at the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone authority in mid-August to exchange views on the result of the preliminary feasibility test on the establishment of the special R&D zone, with about 200 businessmen and experts attending.
For the designation, Busan City selected the shipbuilding and marine plant industry as specialized sectors of the special R&D zone and set up a plan to develop the special zone in partnership with the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
The city plans to designate a 19.34 square kilometer-site in the western Busan as a special R&D zone and then to divide the site into four on an each specialized sector - R&D convergence, production base, commercialization and high-tech industry.
The R&D convergence district will accumulate R&D achievements which will be supplied to companies in the zone to maximize the R&D results, while the production base district will enable companies in the zone to utilize public technologies for development of new technology, increasing productivity and job creation.
The commercialization district will focus on developing regional manufacturers into high added-value, cutting-edge companies, and the high-tech industrial district will integrate the R&D convergence district with research and business to make R&D results commercially available.
