(BUSAN = Newsis) A need for developing a new-type industrial cluster that fuses manufacturing business and knowledge service industry was raised in Busan.

The Busan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) and the National Economic Advisory Council held a seminar on 19 December in Busan to discuss the measure to enhance the competitiveness of service industry of Busan.

The seminar was to discuss the strategies for developing the region’s service industry and collect public opinions on the recent changes in the government’s strategies for service industry.

The subject of the seminar was “the importance of service industry and its development strategies” and was presented by the Senior Vice President of the Korea Development Institute Kim Joo-hoon.

“Delays on the development of service industry were due to the supply chain structures that were not able to meet the opening and gentrification of service industry. Knowledge-based service industry such as medial and law services need to lower its entry barrier as its development is highly limited due to its pursuit of competition restrictive interest. Labor sensitive industry such as whole and retail services or accommodation industries need to take exit strategy as the competition in the market is soaring due to its low entry barrier,” said Kim.

Professor of Busan National University Lee Geun-jae said on this matter that the development in medical and educational industries must be thoroughly examined and generally accepted by the public as they are mostly regarded as the public goods in Korea.

“In order to lead the development of local service industry and turn it to a value-added industry, we need to develop a new industrial cluster that integrates the local’s manufacturing industry and knowledge-based industry. Also, because the higher value-added knowledge-based industry requires quality human resources, we need to continue investment in the R&D to nurture experts in the relevant industry,” said Senior Fellow of the Busan Development Institute Joo Soo-hyeon and Professor of Dong-a University Choi Hyung-lim.
