Busan to Develop Emerging Marine Markets by Converging BT•MT•ICT

(BUSAN=Yon Hap News) The City of Busan announced on July 5 that it plans to develop emerging marine markets by converging biotechnology (BT), marine technology (MT) and information and communications technology (ICT) as the pledge of Seo Byung-soo next Mayor of Busan, the sixth mayor to be elected by popular vote.

The City will promote technology transfer through commercialization and industrialization of marine technology and bring synergy through direct engagement of companies by building an industrial complex.

Also, the City will graft marine technology onto the regional industries to develop a future strategic industry and establish a platform of marine related ICT and a corporate support system.

The City will create a marine bioindustry cluster in east Busan by 2018 as an action task to develop the emerging marine markets.

The City will invest KRW 107.2 billion in developing the marine bio-company industrial complex and attracting relevant companies by 2016 and set the project period from 2015 to 2019 to promote the establishment of the Korea marine bioindustry research center.

The City will establish a ballast water treatment system mobile test facility next year.

The R&D Special Zone of Gangseo District and Yeongdo District will be equipped with high-tech marine science technology industrialization support system.

The City will invest KRW 37 billion of national and municipal expenditure in Gangseo District by 2019 to establish a gas hydrates applied technology center and KRW 23.7 billion of national expenditure in Yeongdo District to build a marine industry business center by 2017.

The City will also create a marine ICT convergence business belt in Dongsam innovation zone marine clusters.

Furthermore, the City will invest KRW 133 billion of national expenditure to establish a marine super-computing center by 2017 and KRW 232.6 billion to develop e-navigation project by 2020.

The City plans to establish the standing of Busan as the ocean capital of Korea by building the foundation for high-tech marine science technology and boosting the regional economy.
