The low-cost carrier said the first scheduled flight will take off on Jan. 7 and will be the first of its kind to link Busan, the country's largest port and a key economic hub, with the Chinese city. No other South Korean carrier operates the route.

Flights will take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, the company said.

Yanji is the seat of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in eastern Jilin province and has a large ethnic Korean population. Besides catering to ethnic Koreans visiting South Korea, the city is not far from Mount Paekdu, the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula and a popular tourist destination.

The no-frills airline said it plans to use its A321 jets on the route that can carry 195 passengers. The flight will take just under three hours.
