According to Yonhap News,

(BUSAN=Yonhap News) Busan City's effort to nurture the drone industry will begin in earnest from this year.

The city will foster drone-related industries in association with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and build a park near the Nakdong River to hold drone racing competitions.

Busan announced on January 1 that it has designated the drone industry as a new growth engine and will build a IoT-based demonstration cluster by investing KRW 20 billion for four years starting this year.

The city plans to foster the IoT-applied drone industry in cooperation with consortia established among universities, government agencies and companies.

Major application areas of the drone industry include: monitoring of marine safety accidents such as rip current and jellyfish in beaches; harbor surveillance such as detection of unauthorized vessels; transportation requiring urgent logistics such as medical goods; surveillance on the Nakdong River ecological park; and marine city virtual tourism service.

As Youngdo in Busan has been designated as a testing space to launch drones, various experiments are expected to be conducted.

A city official said, "Busan is well positioned to nurture relevant industries as it has manufacturing capability to produce unmanned aircraft as well as excellent manpower and enough coastal space to fly drones."

Busan City will also set out to promote the drone industry among the general public.

As part of such efforts, the city will hold 'Drone Show Korea 2017' jointly with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in BEXCO for three days from January 19.

In addition, a park dedicated to drone flying will be created in the Hwamyeong Ecological Park. The city plans to hold a large-scale drone racing competition here.

In August, a competition for drone navigation system is scheduled to be held.
