(BUSAN=Yonhap News) Construction of the new landmark opera house at Busan Port will begin in the first half of this year.
Busan Metropolitan City revealed on January 15 that the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has recently approved of the implementation plan for the Busan Port North Port Opera House Construction Project, and accordingly made an official announcement.
The new Busan Opera House will be built as a five-story structure with two underground floors on a site spanning 29,542 square meters of land and with a floor area of 51,617 square meters in the Marine Culture District within the North Port Redevelopment Project area.
The opera house will be the largest performance venue in the southeast region when it opens, complete with the finest sound and stage facilities for operas, ballets, dances, musicals, plays and other performances.
After Busan and Lotte Group signed an agreement on the construction and donation of the opera house worth KRW 100 billion in 2008, a free lease agreement was signed for the project site in 2016. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries approved the project in 2017 and the implementation design was finalized in December of that year.
Based on the implementation plan, Busan will issue an invitation for bid through the Public Procurement Service, complete discussions on the construction in the first half of this year,and select a developer and supervisor for the project.
Taking advantage of the vocational characteristics of being a transportation hub with waterside spaces, international cruise terminal and the transfer center at Busan Station, the city will create the opera house will ino a hub facility for international marine tourism that attracts domestic anc cruise tourists.
The new venue will be created as a modern performance hall, complete with cultural infrastructure such as a rooftop plaza, and will serve as a space for citizens in the Southeast region that also gives them opportunities to enjoy sophisticated performances and music.
When it opens, the opera house is expected to revitalize the old center of the city in Dong-gu and Jung-gu.
According to a Busan city government source, the ministry's recent approval of the implementation plan has enabled the commencement of construction, allowing the city to work on measures to effectively operate and create profit from the new opera house, set for completion in 2021.
