The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on December 23 that it had ordered the "Busan New Port's Small Pier Construction," in preparation for an increase in the number of small vessels visiting Busan Port.

Currently, 29 small vessels use the Busan New Port, including a government vessel, a service vessel, a fuel vessel, and a water supply vessel. However, the number would likely increase as the expansion project of the Busan New Port is almost at completion. Thus, the Pier's expansion project ws brought up.

The plan was reflected in the "Third Port Basic Plan Revision" last year, and had completed the basic and work design before the construction order on December 17.

The Ministry of will invest KRW 34.8 billion for 3 years starting from next year to the year of 2021, and relocate the current pier and then construct additional piers with a length of 590m and 220m, respectively.

When the expansion of the small vessels' pier is complete, it will expand the port's capacity limit of small vessels from 29 to 117.

Once the construction is complete, the Ministry expects the port to provide an enhanced level of port services that match the status of Busan Port, to internationally renowned international shipping companies and mid to small ship operators in Northeast Asia.
