According to Yonhap News,

Busan will be transformed into a hub city of power semiconductor by building production facilities and value chains for power semiconductor, which are key components of electric vehicles.

Busan city held the 15th Emergency Economic Measures Meeting in the conference room of Busan City Hall and discussed ways to create a power semiconductor value chain on August 19.

The meeting was participated by about 20 semiconductor experts, including those from power semiconductor companies, related organizations, and professors.

At the meeting, the city announced that it will establish a value chain of the power semiconductor industry by building the power semiconductor infrastructure, creating an industrial ecosystem, fostering professional manpower through connection with the region, industry, and academia, and creating clusters.

First, the SiC Power Semiconductor Commercialization Center will be built on 4,667㎡ site in Jangan-eup, Gijang-gun, to provide public services such as R&D and consignment production

In connection with the existing Pusan National University Commercialization Center, the SiC Center will support the development of power semiconductors by domestic companies, and will begin mass production by being equipped with reliability equipment by 2022.

Busan city will also build the production infrastructure for GaN power semiconductors, one of the next-generation power semiconductors along with SiC power semiconductors.

SiC power semiconductors are used for high voltages such as electric vehicles, energy storage systems (ESS), and high voltage transmission, while GaN power semiconductors are used for low voltages such as high-speed chargers, 5G mobile communications, and data servers.

Also, the city will build a virtuous cycle structure in four key areas of power semiconductors, including materials, devices, packages (assembly), and reliability test (verification).

The city plans to reinforce cooperative network home and abroad by attracting 'ICSCRM', an international conference attended by world-renowned scholars and researchers. It is also planning to nurture professional manpower in connection with the region, industry, and academia.

The city will push for customized education between companies and universities required for nurturing professional manpower in cooperation with the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, Pusan National University, and Kyungnam Information University, and operate a joint consultative committee on professional manpower with the Korea Power Device Industry Association.

To promote clusterizaiton of companies, it will also improve regulations by such measures as establishing a one-stop system for factory licensing and permitting, easing environmental regulations, and providing support when constructing factories through rent reductions and loans.

Participants in the meeting said, "Busan-si should implement preemptive and active policies to prepare for an increasing demand for power semiconductors due to expansion of electric vehicle production, and others in the future."

Busan mayor said, "we will actively push for policies by reflecting vocies from the field, in order to bolster the competitiveness of the power semiconductor industry in Busan area."
