According to Yonhap News,

Busan Port Authority (BPA) announced on August 27 that it has begun construction of a pier dedicated to small and medium-sized container ships (feeders) carrying less than 4,000 20-foot containers to the north of Busan New Port West Container Pier.

As the Busan New Port is mainly operated by large ships traveling on ocean routes such as the Americas and Europe, feeder ships that carry transshipment cargo to and from ports in China, Japan, and Southeast Asia used to unloading at the northern port, far from Busan New Port.

For this reason, a significant portion of transshipment cargo, which accounts for more than half of Busan Port's container traffic, has to go back and forth between the new port and the North Port through internal ports or land routes, increasing logistics costs and time.

To solve this problem, a pier dedicated to feeder ships with a length of 384.8 m will be built at a cost of 78.1 billion won to the north of the New Port West Container Pier.

The underground construction, which is scheduled to be completed in the first half of 2024, will be carried out by DL E&C.

The BPA plans to entrust the upper part construction to a contractor selected through bidding when the underground construction is completed, aiming to open in the first half of 2025.

The pier dedicated to feeder ships is to be operated by the Western Container Pier operator in integration with the piers for Phase 2-5 and Phase 2-6.

The BPA has recently selected the Dongwon New Port Container Terminal Consortium, which soely participated in the bidding for the West Container Pier operator, as the preferred bidder, working on detailed negotiations.

Phase 2-5 of 3 berths, is scheduled to open in July 2023, and Phase 2-6 of 2 berths in July 2026.
