Pukyong National University plans to establish a semiconductor department and a graduate school specializing in next-generation semiconductors that foster 250 semiconductor industry experts annually, including 50 undergraduates and 200 graduates.

Responding to the shortage of high-tech industry manpower, Pukyong National University has recently completed collecting opinions on the new high-tech department plan and decided to nurture field-tailored semiconductor experts.

The university will set up the department with its human and material infrastructure based on its convergence major and micro-degree courses with existing semiconductor fields such as Nano Convergence Engineering; Materials Engineering; New Material Systems Engineering; and Display Semiconductor Engineering, semiconductor major track projects operated by government financial support in the semiconductor field, Smart Green Convergence, and Composite Materials Talent Development Research Center.

On 2024, the year when the department and graduate school are established, cutting-edge semiconductor experts, not only with knowledge in advanced semiconductor fields such as power semiconductors and intelligent semiconductors, but also with practical skills through cooperation with semiconductor companies, will be fostered by the university.

Also, a dedicated space for semiconductor experiments and practice is also provided. Using semiconductor equipment worth KRW 6 billion supported by semiconductor companies, a laboratory will be created as a stand-alone building at Yongdang Campus, Nam-gu, Busan, a campus specializing in industry-university cooperation.

In particular, the university has recently concluded agreements with major universities nationwide, such as Kyungpook National University, Korea University, Kumoh University of Technology, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Yonsei University, Hanyang University, and KAIST, which have strengths in the semiconductor field, to maximize the effects of education and research, and promote knowledge exchange system.

President Jang Young-soo of Pukyong National University said, “As a national university, we will contribute to the growth and development of local industries as well as nurturing future talents through convergence and industrial-educational cooperation that responds to the policy direction of nurturing talents in high-tech new industries and applies research results to industrial sites."
