According to Yonhap News,

South Korea's first container ports with automated quay cranes officially opened on Sep. 2. The Busan Container Terminal (BCT) announced on the day that an opening ceremony for six ports will be held at the Busan New Port before they start running.

First time in a decade, soon-to-be opened terminals are capable of handling the capacity of 2.20 million TEU (1TEU refers to a 20 feet container). As with the addition of three new terminals, the number of berths at the Busan ports has increased to 25, from 22.

SIx ports first introduced an automated quay crane that loads and off-loads containers. And the terminal operator explained that a way of remote-controlling to operate quay cranes allowed more efficiency and secured safety.

Besides quay cranes, automated yard cranes as well as other advanced equipment are involved as well.

The BCT has checked the safety of berths by operating a pilot program on one of three.

With west containers at the Busan port in the making, the phase 2-5 and 2-6 ports are to open next year.

The phase 2-5 port, the size of which equals to three vessels, will be installed by next July , while the opening of the phase 2-6 will begin from ports exclusive for the Middle & Small Ship in July, 2024 and others no later than 2026.
