According to Yonhap News,

Busan, a maritime city, is gaining attention as a hub for research and development (R&D) from large shipbuilding companies engaged in the development of eco-friendly ships and advanced shipbuilding equipment technologies.

According to Busan-si on January 26, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Ocean on January 22nd to establish a Busan Engineering Center.

The Hanwha Ocean Busan Engineering Center is scheduled to open in May this year, and 150 design professionals in the marine and special ship sectors will begin working there. The company plans to hire an additional 350 design engineers by 2027 to work at the Busan Engineering Center.

Earlier, in June 2023, the Busan-si succeeded in attracting Samsung Heavy Industries’ Busan R&D Center.

Samsung Heavy Industries invested KRW 4.8 billion to establish its Busan R&D Center (1,700㎡). Currently, 120 employees are working at the center, responsible for designing floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) production facilities, which involve the extraction and refining of natural gas at sea, followed by its liquefaction and storage/unloading.

Hanwha Power Systems is also planning to invest KRW 3.6 billion in Busan by 2026 to establish a ship solutions business center and hire around 200 people, including ship design and R&D personnel.

Oriental Precision & Engineering, a company specializing in ship cranes, has decided to build an "R&D Campus" in Busan.

Oriental Precision & Engineering is a shipbuilding equipment manufacturer that produces cranes and upper structures for ships. It is the market leader in the domestic ship crane sector and listed on KOSDAQ.

The company will establish its own R&D center in the site within Eco-Delta City research zone, covering 3,500 pyeong (approximately 11,580㎡), becoming the first domestic shipbuilding equipment company to do so.

According to the city and the shipbuilding industry, R&D centers of shipbuilding companies continue to be built in Busan due in part to many related university departments and research institutes in the city, which help secure high-quality talent.

Busan is also considered an ideal location for R&D centers, as it is home to large shipyards within an hour’s distance and has a concentration of industries related to shipping, ports, and shipbuilding, creating a conducive environment for R&D.
